Shinji And Co. Lose Their Mecha

Dark Horse has published a variety of Neon Genesis Evangelion spin-offs, including The Shinji Ikari Raising Project, and Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse

In Campus Apocalypse, Shinji Ikari is a student at the NERV Academy, a fancy private school. One night, he sees a group of his fellow pupils locked in a battle with a humanoid being out on the street. Armed with a sword, a spear and a whip, the trio of Kaworu, Rei and Asuka claim to be defending humankind from Angels, creatures that plan to wipe out mankind by collecting powerful gems known as Cores.

Campus Apocalypse, written and drawn by Ming Ming, first appeared in Japan in 2007 in the pages of the shoujo title Monthly Asuka, home to Code Geass. The series certainly puts a distinct spin of the Evangelion universe, with no mecha in sight.
