Kids on the Slope

A series set in the 1960s with a heavy jazz influence is probably going to sound dull to anyone born in the last 30 years or so, but Kids on the Slope deserves your utmost attention. The romantic coming of age series marks the first collaboration between director Shinichiro Watanabe and composer Yoko Kanno since the legendary Cowboy Bebop. While there are no space cowboys to be found, the series is no less engrossing. When Kaoru Nishimi moves to the quiet town of Sasebo, he meets local 'bad boy' Sentaro and the beautiful Ritsuko. A shared love of jazz music leads the young friends to form a band, and through the expressive power of music the trio navigate growing up in an era of huge social change. It's as far removed from a typical anime series as can be imagined, and despite its simplistic setting it looks as good as it sounds. Give your eyes and ears a treat when MVM release the complete series later in 2013!
