From Up On Poppy Hill

From Up On Poppy Hill was Japan's top grossing movie in 2011, with a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki and directorial duties performed by his son Goro Miyazaki.

In 1963, Japan was still recovering from the aftermath of World War II and about to be transformed in the rush towards industrialisation. Umi's father was lost serving with the navy during the Korean War. Now everyday she raises nautical flags on the top of Poppy Hill overlooking the harbour to send out the message 'Safe Travels' in the hopes of her father somehow finding his way home. Shun is the editor of the high school newspaper and the leader of a campaign to save the Latin Quarter, the school's clubhouse, from demolition. Umi joins the cause to save the building as a romance slowly builds between the two youngsters.

From Up On Poppy Hill is on DVD and Blu-ray from Studio Canal now.
