Btooom!

Sakamoto Ryota is unemployed, lives with his mother, and spends all day playing his favourite online video game, Btooom! In the game, players battle it out using bombs and Ryota is currently ranked tenth in the world, although his mother never tires of pointing out that he's wasting his time. Then one day, Ryota wakes up on a tropical island with a collection of bombs in his possession to find he is trapped inside a real life version of the game. Can he apply his virtual skills to survive this brutal contest, or will he be blown to smithereens?

If Sword Art Online has not satisfied your craving for anime about people trapped inside video games against their will, Btooom! should hit the spot. The series, produced by Madhouse Studios, is directed by Kotono Watanabe who was one of the directors on the anime version of Supernatural, so she has plenty of experience handling dark subject matter and menace. Btooom! is out on to DVD from MVM now.
