When aquatic aliens invade and overwhelm conventional military forces, who’s best suited to drive back the aggressors and reclaim the oceans? C’mon, this is anime – the answer is a cadre of moe schoolgirls, of course!

Dry Dock

Fubuki may look like a regular school girl, but she isn’t. She’s a Fleet Girl, the living embodiment of the soul of a battleship. That makes her one of the few people alive capable of staving off the Abyssal Fleet, a ferociously powerful cluster of ships that appeared out of nowhere and drew humanity out of the oceans.

The newest recruit for Torpedo Squadron Three, Fubuki embodies a Special Type destroyer, a potentially incredibly powerful vessel. Unfortunately, she’s never been in combat – which poses a problem when she’s called up for duty on her first day. While the other girls – including her new roommates Mutsuki and Yudachi; sisters Sendai, Jintsu, and Naka; and the mighty Akagi, whose torpedo-arrows transform into combat aircraft – equip their weaponised ship outfits and sail into battle, Fubuki is struggling to even stay upright on the water!

Luckily, this is a show about friendship as much as naval combat, and as the series progresses the unsure Fubuki learns to harness her power thanks to her comrades’ assistance and training. But even as the team bonds, can they really hope to defeat the alien Abyssal Fleet?

Although KanColle riffs on themes you’ve undoubtedly seen before, it does it with a level of skill and creative polish that makes it easy to enjoy. The series streams to the UK via Crunchyroll.com.
