Danganronpa: The Animation

Distributor: Manga
Date: Out Now

It’s a big step for any anime protagonist to start at their new high-school. Who knows what might happen? Maybe they’ll fall in love, maybe they’ll bond with a ragtag sports team… or maybe they’ll be imprisoned by a psychotic teddy bear and forced to kill other students off in an elaborate death game! That last one may not seem too likely, but that’s exactly what happens to Makoto Naegi and his classmates in Danganronpa: The Animation.

Based on the first in a series of visual novel / murder-mystery games, Danganronpa details the (often very short) lives of the unlucky students chosen to attend the Hope’s Peak Academy, where the only homework set by Monokuma, their cuddly captor, is for them to kill another student – and then get away with it. To level the playing field, each brutal murder is followed by a multiple-way courtroom trial where the ever-dwindling number of eclectic students try and figure out who the culprit is – think Battle Royale meets Phoenix Wright – knowing that if they accuse an innocent party, everyone but the murderer will become victims of Monokuma’s nefarious deathtraps.

The series retains the bright, bouncy and gleefully gruesome artistic style that the games are famous for, as well as giving animated life to the diverse group of students who are unlucky enough to attend Hope’s Peak. As with any normal school, you’ve got your sporty students, your rich kids, and otaku... as well as serial killers, fortune tellers and fledgling yakuza!
