Case of Hana and Alice

A prequel to the 2004 teen romance movie Hana and Alice, Case of Hana and Alice explores the two teens’ first meeting as they bond whilst investigating a murder-mystery that took place within their own school – isn’t that how everyone makes friends? While the original movie was live-action, the prequel shifts mediums to an animated format, recreating the likenesses of the original actresses, who reprised their roles for the prequel – despite being a decade older – through the use of shooting rotoscoped footage which was then animated, as well as providing the characters’ voices. This movie is also by the same director, Shunji Iwai, who takes on his first feature-length animated project. Even though simply changing mediums would be enough of a challenge on its own for most directors to handle, Iwai also decided to write, edit, and create the movie’s soundtrack! But the film doesn’t rest on its laurels when it comes to the art and animation either, utilising a slick cel-shaded style for the characters, complemented by painterly watercolour-esque backgrounds.
