ANIME & MANGA - Article

We love sports anime here at NEO – there’s something thrilling about taking the excitement of super powered combat found in the likes of One Piece and Dragon Ball Z, and translating it to the real world. You may never be able to fire off a Kamehameha, but train hard enough and you might be able to spike a ball as well as Shoyo Hinata in Manga’s upcoming volleyball epic, Haikyu!!

Based on Haruichi Furudate’s manga from the pages of Shonen Jump – we told you, sports anime can hold their weight against the likes of Naruto! – Haikyu!! follows Shoyo as he sets out to become the greatest volleyball player in the world. His diminutive frame had ruled him out for most other team sports, but he finds inspiration in the typically beach-bound game after seeing a similarly short player nicknamed “Little Giant” dominate in Japan’s national team.

Unfortunately, Shoyo’s efforts to start a volleyball club in middle school meet an ignominious end, crushed after one game against Tobio Kageyama, a prodigy nicknamed the “King of the Court”. Years later, now enrolled at Karasuno High School, he crosses paths with Tobio again – only this time, they’re on the same team! Can the former rivals get past their differences and learn to work together? And why does Tobio hold a grudge against Shoyo anyway, when he won their last match?

Directed by Susumi Mitsunaka and written by Taku Kishimoto (who penned the emotional rollercoaster Bunny Drop), Haikyu!! promises drama, thrills, and dynamically animated action – and a pretty boy cast, if that’s your thing! The series will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in two 13-episode sets, starting in January.
