Gatchaman Crowds

Animatsu’s first anime title, Gatchaman Crowds, will be reviewed in NEO 136, on sale 16 April. “We are so excited to announce that we have secured the UK distribution rights for Gatchaman Crowds through Sentai Filmworks” Animatsu told us. “This fantastic new series is from the writer of Blue Exorcist and Darker Than Black and the production studio behind Speed Racer. Gatchaman Crowds is based on the original 1972 hit series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, also known as Battle of the Planets. Consisting of 12 action-packed episodes, this unique concept and exceptional visual style will have fans begging for season two to hurry up and be released. Watch out alien intruders: attempt to threaten Earth’s populace and you will have the Gatchamen to answer to, and they take no prisoners! Whether you’re a fan of the original or just or action / sci-fi anime, we know you will love this show.”

Selecting Gatchaman Crowds as part of Animatsu’s opening lineup is a smart choice - the series has a grounding in a fan-favourite franchise that goes back to the original Gatchaman, and its American remake, Battle of the Planets. The familiar title will no doubt draw in old fans who want to see a fresh take on the show, whilst hooking in a new crowd thanks to the vibrant visual appeal of this latest offering. The complex plot of the show takes great delight in revealing itself slowly as the episode count racks up, masking its intricacy with comedy and action aplenty. There’s style here, but there’s plenty of substance too, and an overall message that is refreshingly positive about humanity and its potential. Make sure you check back in later issues of NEO as we reveal the rest of Animatsu’s lineup!
