Ping Pong

Peco and Smile are friends bound together by their love of ping pong, despite their very different personalities. Where Peco is brash and bursting with confidence, Smile is almost robotic in his implacable demeanour, but when they face a trio of tough opponents – Chinese whiz Kong Wenge, the aggressive Manabu Sakuma, and the technically brilliant Ryuichi Kazama – their skills and friendship are tested to their limits. Taiyo Matsumoto’s Ping Pong started life as a manga in 1996 and was adapted into a live action movie in 2002 by Fumihiko Sori, released here in the UK by ICA Films. Now Matsumoto’s tale of the trials and triumphs of table tennis has become an anime by Masaaki Yuasa, one of the episode directors on Space Dandy and Adventure Time. Anime Ltd is aiming for a release on DVD and Blu-ray in January and the set should include all 11 episodes of the series with both the Japanese and English language dubs.
