My HiME Complete Collection

Mai Tohika is the new girl in class at the prestigious Fuka Academy. She is also a HiME, which stands for Highly Advanced Materialising Equipment - incidentally, the winner of the equally prestigious Laziest Acronym in Media prize, also know as the LAME award. Being a HiME means Mai has special powers, and the Fuka Academy is full of girls with superpowers, brought together to battle hideous creatures known as Orphans.

The series blends school life with fantasy adventure, so one episode may be big on action only to be followed by one focusing on Mai's relationships with her classmates. They include Mikoto, a girl who wields a huge two-handed sword in combat and has a major Sapphic crush on Mai, and the pistol-packing Natsuki. The plot is occasionally patchy - when we first encounter Natsuki, she is hunting Mikoto, and the two engage in an explosive battle. It's great fun to watch, but makes no sense in light of subsequent events. The English script is occasionally stilted, but overall My HiME is thoroughly enjoyable.

A hearty cocktail of action, magical girls and drama - drink up!
