Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan - Season 1 Part 2

Rikuo faces the most serious challenge to his position as heir of the Nura clan when the ambitious Tamazuki leads the 88 Demons Of Shikoku in a bid to seize control of the yokai world. After the light-hearted first half of the series, the tone is less playful in part two, with a much stronger threat in the form of Tamazuki and his cohorts. The bad guys include Inugami, a slavering bundle of aggression who is all too willing to target Rikuo's vulnerable human friends, and Inuhoo, a giant fire-breathing rooster who is both ridiculous and awesome at the same time. Whenever Inuhoo fights, it is almost impossible not to think of the chicken from Family Guy.

There is plenty of action in this instalment, but the screenplay could be stronger. The lengthy final showdown between the Nura and Shikoku yokai armies is frequently interrupted by flashbacks and cutaways which dilutes the tension. It would be more effective to set up the key story elements in advance, rather than to spoon-feed information to the viewer only when something becomes a plot point. Rikuo's human friends are largely superfluous to the major story arc and their appearances during the final battle add nothing dramatically. And, as was the case in part one, Rikuo remains so all powerful in his yokai form that there is never any real sense that he might possibly lose to Tamazuki.

Cool design work on the yokai and some fun battles are offset by the clumsy storytelling.
