A Brush With Magic

The talented manga artist Sonia Leong (also a NEO contributor this issue!) turns her hand to prose for the fantasy light novel A Brush With Magic. Painting rich scenes just as effortlessly with words as she does with her pencil, Leong has created an engaging, lively and entertaining story in these 200-odd pages, following the escapades of two unlikely companions in arms – bloodthirsty Vulpine warrior Rua, and soft-spoken Elven mage Silas. What starts out as a simple rescue mission for the pair soon leads to the revelation of dark secrets, as they discover the brutal, divine powers each harbour.

Interspersed with full page art-work, this is in the best tradition of Japanese light novels, mixing prose with illustrations. Leong tells her story with her customary dry wit, and her flair for creating dramatic, breath-taking set-pieces is much in evidence. Coupled with immersive world-building, this short novel will have you begging for more.

A rip-roaring fantasy adventure with luscious illustrations throughout.
