Bleach Season 15: Part 2

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but when it comes to Bleach season 15, that adage is severely put to the test. Having learned some hard truths about the nature of the dangerous reigai (replicant bodies inhabited by violent ‘mod souls’) attacking them, the second half of the season kicks off with the members of the Soul Society backed into a pretty tight corner. The Soul Reaper captains have been trapped in the spirit world, unable to prevent their reigai clones attempting to capture Nozomi, a mysterious green-haired girl whom the ever-weakening Ichigo, and his hard-pressed friends, have sworn to protect.

A non-canon story exclusive to the anime, the season 15 Gotei 13 Invading Army arc is an example of filler, for the most part, done right. There’s a fair amount of story crammed into this penultimate season, hidden amongst the relentless action sequences and occasionally over-used flashbacks. Even Kon, more often the butt of the jokes than the heart of the story, gets the chance to reveal a compassionate quality that is thrown into stark contrast with the cold, calculating plotting of bad guy Kageroza Inaba.

It doesn’t quite do enough to feel like absolutely essential viewing, but for the Bleach completist, there’s plenty here to enjoy. Just don’t go making a copy of it.

While technically little more than a stop-gap before the show’s final outing, the climactic half of season 15 is nonetheless a gripping watch.
