Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse Part 1

What a crazy time the ‘60s were – free love, the moon landing, and… alien invasion? In the world of Muv-Luv Alternative – Total Eclipse, the Earth has been at war with monstrous beings from outer space known as the BETA for the decades since then, and it seems like their struggle is a hopeless one. Yui Takamura is a young mecha pilot and student who is pushed into the action sooner than expected when the BETA make a move on her home in Kyoto. Three years after the destruction of the Imperial Capital, she meets Yuuya Bridges, an American pilot, and as part of a multicultural squadron of other soldiers, they repel the alien menace, investigate intrigue within their human allies, and of course, have a tendency to fight with each other – in true romantic subplot fashion.

Mecha versus aliens is most likely a premise that we’ve all seen at least one series based on before now, and while Muv-Luv doesn’t necessarily set itself apart from the crowd in some ways, it still stands up on its own merits – solid animation and art, and an increasingly interesting story – one that comes to focus more on character interactions and the intrigue between the various factions at work than blasting gooey space monsters. If you’ve watched your old favourites to death, and now you want a series that goes a little more behind-the-scenes in the world of flying robots duking it out with evil extra-terrestrials (and each other), then this series will be one to check out this summer.

The promising first half of a series with heaps of potential.
