ANIME & MANGA - Review

Ninja Slayer

Dark, complex, and jam-packed with action, nudity and violence, Ninja Slayer is probably what Quentin Tarantino would come up with if he was a manga artist. Telling the story of a man driven to madness due to the death of his family at the hands of ninjas, Ninja Slayer is set in a futuristic city overrun with criminals and yakuza gangs. Salaryman Kenji Fujikido’s wife and child are killed in a turf war, and he subsequently finds himself overrun by the soul of a ninja. Together, they create Ninja Slayer, a warrior for justice in an unjust world. The tale is depicted in a heavy hand by artist Yuki Yogo, and the panels are filled with boxes which explain the action as you go along, making this feel very much like you’re reading an illustrated script or a storyboard for an action movie.

Bloodthirsty action and mature themes – a cult classic just waiting to happen?
