ANIME & MANGA - Review

Die Wergelder Volume 1

From the author of Blade of the Immortal – the Eisner award-winning Hiroaki Samura – comes a new, gritty and violent tale of misdeeds, criminal gangs and revenge. Following three women (Shinobu, Nami and Jie Mao), the story touches on mature themes including prostitution, pornography and sexual abuse, skirting along the edge of exploitation as it does so. The tale isn’t quite one of female empowerment, but it’s certainly a step beyond the typical fanservice offerings of other tales in the seinen genre. In a way, this feels very much like a manga version of Kill Bill, as it follows powerful women in the search for bloody vengeance, and is unafraid in the process to get its hands dirty. Plenty of action and darkness on offer here, in this edition which collects together volumes one and two of the original series.

Bas-ass action and some lethal heroines – a grim and gritty manga from the creator of Blade of the Immortal.
