Men And Monsters

Hong Kong actor Kim Yoon-suk's career is full of unforgettable characters - his role as the boss and master thief in new HK movie The Thieves is just one of many memorable parts. He was terrifying as the hatchet wielding mobster Myun-ga in The Yellow Sea. Asked how he prepared to play such an extreme personality, Kim replies, "Each period of history produces its own outlaws, whether they are pirates or Vikings or whatever. In that sort of lawless state your survival instincts come into play, like they do with Myun-ga in The Yellow Sea, so psychologically I focused on the single-mindedness he would need to survive in that environment."

In Na Hong-jin's dark thriller The Chaser, Kim was the anti-hero Joong-ho, an ex-cop turned pimp hunting for a missing woman. "That was a character who was almost beyond salvation standing at the point of no return," says Kim. "Rather than a traditional battle between good and evil it was about holding on to that spark of conscience that makes him human."
