Pacific Rim

Guillermo Del Toro was the brains behind the two Hellboy movie adaptations and the brilliant Pan's Labyrinth, but now the Mexican-born director turns his attention to a distinctly Japanese genre - the kaiju movie - with his forthcoming summer blockbuster Pacific Rim. When huge monsters emerge from the Pacific Ocean and rampage across the globe, humankind fights back using massive mecha called Jaegers that are commanded by two pilots simultaneously, linked by a neural bridge. But as the monsters prove too powerful for the giant robots, the last line of defence is an obsolete Jaeger piloted by an untested rookie, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) and a washed up combat veteran, Raleigh Becket (Chris Hunnam). Rinko Kikuchi started her acting career in Japan with roles in The Taste Of Tea and Mamoru Oshii's Assault Girls, but she has since moved into international productions with Tran Anh Hung's Norwegian Wood and Mikael Hafstrom's Shanghai. See Rinko kick some kaiju butt when Pacific Rim opens in cinemas across the UK on 12 July.
