Carina Lau

Playing China's first female Empress in Detective Dee, the great Carina Lau may not have as much screen time as the film's leading lady Bingbing Lee but she still captivates with a radiance and ambiguity that is essential to the movie's plot. Looking a good decade shy of her actual 45 years, Lau has been a fixture of Chinese cinema since her early turns in the likes of Project A Part II (1986) and Armour of God (1987). She is married to the equally iconic Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (star of Hard Boiled and Chungking Express) and, shockingly, was kidnapped and held hostage in 1990 by a Triad gang during the filming of Wong Kar Wai's Day of Being Wild.
