Shougeki Goraigan

The recently concluded Shougeki Gouraigan is defined as the first "love comedy battle tokusatsu", and combines special effects, intricate yet grotesque horror-themed costume design, and even a touch of nudity. The series is largely seen through the eyes of Hitomi Kai, a shy girl whose spiritual awareness makes her one of the few people able to see Magii, creatures accidentally released on Earth by Gou, a warrior of light. With only 100 days until the Magii amass enough forces to overrun the world, Gou is forced to gather a reluctant team to defend the planet. While these unwilling heroes provide the action, Hitomi provides the much-needed grounded view into the world of gods and monsters that unfolds. Created by tokusatsu royalty - including Keita Amemiya, creator of the GARO series, and writer Toshiki Inoue, who penned Cutey Honey the Live - Shougeki Gouraigan is an odd mix of inspirations and styles, but one that shows the potential of tokusatsu for mature audiences.
