Iceman

Donnie Yen buckles his swashes (or swashes his buckles?) in September when Iceman comes to the UK. Yen stars as He Ying, a Ming dynasty swordsman who winds up frozen for centuries before he wakes up in modern day Hong Kong to continue his feud with a pair of rogue warriors, played by Wang Baoqiang and Yu Kang.

The movie is directed by Law Wing-Cheong who was assistant director on many of Johnnie To’s films, and who directed Tactical Unit, the TV spin-off from To’s thriller PTU. The story is adapted from the 1989 Hong Kong classic The Iceman Cometh, directed by Clarence Fok, which starred Yuen Biao and Yuen Wah as two duelling warriors transported across time, so it has a lot to live up to.

While the film had a cool reception from critics, it was a hit in Hong Kong and a sequel is in the works. Iceman is on DVD now from Kaleidoscope Entertainment.
