Gangster Payday

It’s a tough life being a hardened criminal in Lee Po-Cheung’s Gangster Payday. Brother Ghost (Anthony Wong) is a Triad boss who runs karaoke joints and massage parlours, but business just isn’t what it used to be. When he falls for café owner Mei (Charlene Choi) he sees the chance for a change of career as well as possible romance, but Mei is secretly smitten with Ghost’s handsome young subordinate Leung (Wong Yau-nam). Complicating matters, rival Triad boss Bill (Keung Hon-man) is trying to muscle in on Ghost’s territory – including Mei’s café.

Gangster Payday has been hailed as a return to the style of Hong Kong cinema of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, and the cast is packed with veterans, including Carrie Ng and Chai Wai-Man, the real life hard man who fought professionally in boxing and kickboxing, and who was an actual Triad member. Lee Po-Cheung’s film is a blend of romantic comedy and gangland thriller, and will be out in the UK on 28 September from Terracotta.
