Woman Of The Dunes at the Barbican

As part of their Step Into The Dark season, the Barbican is holding a screening of Hiroshi Teshigahra's The Woman Of The Dunes.

Originally released in 1964 and adapted from the novel by Kobo Abe, who wrote the screenplay, the film concerns a young man (Eiji Okada) who is trapped by local villagers into living with a mysterious widow (Kyoko Kishida) in a house located beneath the sand.

She spends her days scooping out the sand that threatens to swallow her home, while her prisoner assists her and contemplates his fate.

The screening will be presented by the acclaimed documentary filmmaker Nick Broomfield who will be on hand for a Q&A session after the movie with writer and film curator Gareth Evans.
