Vulgaria

'Vulgaria' was the biggest grossing Hong Kong film of 2012 - not bad for a movie whose plot revolves around the misadventures of an aging pornographic actress!

To Wai-Chen (Chapman To) is a struggling movie producer in desperate need of a hit, as he needs alimony for his ex-wife if he wants to continue seeing his daughter. So when Wai-Chen is approached by a Triad boss called Tyrannosaurus (Ronald Cheng) to produce a remake of a classic erotic film from the '70s, he accepts. Unfortunately, the gangster has some very particular demands - not least that the original film's leading lady Yum Yum, now in her 60s, reprises her role.

Vulgaria is the latest outing from filmmaker Pang Ho-Cheung, the man horror hit Dream Home, and is a beautifully raunchy send-up of the sex industry, as well as a knowing homage to the original Confessions of a Concubine. To this end, it sees the return of original actress Shaw Yin Yin as the aforementioned leading lady for this new flick. Not as eager as she once was to bump and grind her way back into the hearts of the viewing public, it is decided to place her head onto the body of a new, eager actress using the magic of CG - but of course, things are never as simple as they first seem in movie land!

Combining a hilarious idea with a surprisingly softcore execution, Vulgaria is a meta-movie and a half, and is out from Third Window on Blu-ray and DVD on 15 April.
