Keanu joins the 47 Ronin

Ever since he learnt kung fu for The Matrix, Keanu Reeves has shown a deep love for martial arts movies. His directorial debut, Man Of Tai Chi, is still waiting for a UK release, but in the meantime, Keanu is taking names and kicking butt in 47 Ronin.
While the title references Chushingura, Japan's venerated tale of vengeance, the film takes the basic premise of a squad of ronin out for revenge for the death of their master and uses it as the springboard for an action fantasy in the vein of 300. Keanu plays half-Japanese swordsman Kai, and the cast includes Kou Shibasaki (from Battle Royale and Dororo) as Kai's love interest, plus the always excellent, but criminally underused, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as the Shogun. Hiroyuki Sanada, from Ringu, plays Oishi, the leader of the ronin. First timer Carl Rinsch directs, and Tsuyoshi Abe, who worked on The Last Samurai, trained the cast for their fight scenes. 47 Ronin opened in cinemas on Boxing Day from Universal Pictures.
