The Sword Identity

Xu Haofeng’s The Sword Identity was originally scheduled for a UK release in 2013, but the ups and mostly downs of high street retail throughout last year kept it on the holding shelf. Now distributor MVM is gearing up to finally release the film in 2014. Director and action choreographer Xu was one of the screenwriters on Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmaster and adapted The Sword Identity from his own novel. Liang Henlu (Song Yang) is the last student of a great general who invented a sword style specifically to defeat the Japanese pirates raiding the Chinese coast. Looking to preserve his art, Liang plans to open a martial arts school in the town of Shuangye, but local custom demands he must first fight and defeat representatives from the four schools already there. To make matters more complicated, Liang’s sword resembles a Japanese katana, expressly forbidden in Chinese martial arts. A satire on the intransigence of the martial arts world, The Sword Identity comes to DVD on 1 September from MVM.
