Rigor Mortis

Following his scriptwriting debut with the brutal Revenge: A Love Story in 2010, Hong Kong star Juno Mak (who first became famous as a pop singer) turns director with Rigor Mortis. The film stars Chin Siu-Ho, playing a character also called Chin Siu-Ho, as a washed up former horror movie actor who moves into an apartment building that turns out to be very, very haunted.

Chin was one of the stars of Ricky Lau’s original Mr Vampire movie back in 1985, and the Cantonese title of Rigor Mortis is Geung Si, which means vampire. Sharing the screen are a host of Hong Kong veterans, including fellow Mr Vampire alumni Anthony Chan, Shaw Brothers kung fu queen Kara Hui, and comedian Richard Ng. Unlike Mr Vampire, which deftly mixed comedy and frights, Rigor Mortis is played as a straight horror movie; perhaps a reflection of the influence of the movie’s producer – Takashi Shimizu of The Grudge fame. Rigor Mortis opened in cinemas on 27 March from Metrodome. Hop to it!
