Power Rangers Super Samurai

Master Ji and Antonio, the Gold Ranger, struggle to unlock the secrets of the Black Box, even as the Samurai Rangers come under attack from another wave of Nighloks. Crammed full of exactly the sort of high energy action you'd expect, these episodes of Power Rangers Super Samurai aren't even a little subtle. They are fun though, crammed full of heart, broad comedy and a solid central cast. Antonio, played by Steven Skyler, is especially good, and the show's helped by the slightly different team dynamic he brings with him.

The action is a little samey of course, but it's all energetically staged, and the show's exploration of the Samurai's technology and abilities is very good fun. It also does good work exploring both the heroism of the Rangers and the price they've paid. 'Kevin's Choice' is especially good, as, having lost his Samurazier, Kevin struggles with his place on the team and the sacrifices he made to get there. It's surprisingly heartfelt stuff and the message about teamwork is nicely handled.

Wrapped up with some welcome developments in the Dekker and Dayu plot, this is a fun set of episodes that embodies everything the show does well. If you're a fan, you'll love it.

About as subtle as a Super MegaZord blow to the tentacles, but that's the point. This is a classic formula show that's stayed that way for a reason, and this version is unusually strong.
SCORE: 3/5
