High Flying Trailer For The Lady Assassin

Nguyen Quang Dung's The Lady Assassin is due out in Vietnam in February 2013 and judging by the trailer, Nguyen has successfully captured the spirit and style of the Hong Kong New Wave swordplay genre.

Called My Nhan Ke in Vietnamese, and sometimes referred to in English as The Beauty Trap as well as The Lady Assassin, the film stars Thanh Hang and Tang Thanh Ha as rival female killers.

The movie had a big budget by Vietnamese standards of VND20 billion which works out to roughly US$1 million - a fraction of the cost of making a similar movie in the United States.

The Lady Assassin has an official Facebook page but all the content is in Vietnamese.

If you don't mind the lack of English subs, check out some behind-the-scenes footage on Youtube.

It is encouraging to see more films emerging from Vietnam over the last few years.

Some have even made their way onto DVD here in the UK, including the action-tastic Clash starring Johnny Nguyen and Veronica Ngo which was released here in 2011.

The website Talk Vietnam has an article about the growth of the privately funded film industry in Vietnam, as opposed to state-funded productions, which is worth a read.
