Warriors Of The Steppe - Myn Bala

In 1729 the Dzungars, a ferocious Mongol tribe descended from the legendary Genghis Khan, have swept across the steppes of Kazakhstan.

The Kazakh sultans have left their people to fend for themselves, but one young man refuses to give up and vows to bring the fight to the invaders.

Sartai (Assylkhan Tolepov) assembles a detachment of teenage Kazakh warriors called Myn Bala - a thousand boys in Kazakh - and leads his troops into battle against the seemingly unstoppable might of the Dzungars.

Directed by Akan Satayev Warriors Of The Steppe - Myn Bala is Kazakhstan's official entry for the Oscars and this big budget historical action drama has been compared to Braveheart and 300.

Warriors Of The Steppe - Myn Bala was produced to mark the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan's secession from the Soviet Union and was a huge hit at home.

It's always great to see films from different parts of Asia making their way to the UK and perhaps Satayev's rousing action film will dispel some memories of Borat.

Warriors Of The Steppe - Myn Bala will be out on DVD on 8 April 2013 from 101 Films.
