Fists Of Pride Trailer

French-Canadian documentary filmmaker Hélène Choquette has been exploring social and political issues with her movies since 2001, with her work including The Children Of Chernobyl, A Better Life about migrant Filipino workers in Canada, and The Refugees of the Blue Planet about people displaced by climate change.

On a trip to Thailand in 2000, she saw a Thai Boxing match between two teenage boys in a small village in the North. At first she was appalled by the sight of these boys fighting for the entertainment of the crowd, but afterwards the director was drawn to learn more about what drew these young men to the ring and the unforgiving sport of Muay Thai.

The result of Choquette's research is her film Fists Of Pride which follows a Burmese boy called Young Tiger as he trains for a match at the Water Festival, held on the border between Myanmar and Thailand.

The film will be playing in Canada at the Hot Docs Film Festival that runs from 26 April to 6 May in Toronto.

The trailer is below and it looks terrific. Hopefully the movie will find its way over to the UK, perhaps on the festival circuit.
