Trailer For Sion Sono's The Land Of Hope

Third Window Films has been bringing Asian cinema to the UK since 2005 and now the company has taken its first steps into film production as co-producer of Sion Sono's The Land Of Hope.

After the bleakness of Sono's Hate Trilogy - Love Exposure, Cold Fish and Guilty of Romance - and the darkness of Himizu, Sono's new film marks a change in tone and style for the director.

Inspired by a true story and the events in Fukushima, the movie follows a family's struggle to survive in the aftermath of an earthquake and tsunami.

Yoichi Ono (Jun Murakami) lives with his wife Izumi (Megumi Kagurazaka), and his parents Yasuhiko (Isao Natsuyagi) and Chieko (Naoko Otani), on the family's small farm in Nagashima prefecture.

When an earthquake causes an explosion at the nearby nuclear power plant, the government orders everyone within 20 kilometres to evacuate.

Yet the Onos knows that in Fukushima, the families who were removed from their homes were never allowed to return.

Do they stay and risk being caught in the radioactive fallout from the plant or give up their home forever?

The Land Of Hope will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September before opening in Japan in October.

There is no date set as yet for the UK release but Third Window has said on Facebook that they are hoping to get the movie into the London Film Festival. We'll keep you posted!

In the meantime, what do you think of this change of tone from Sion Sono? Comments below please!
