One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3

Monkey D. Luffy is back and ready for a rumble in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3, the latest incarnation of the hit videogame series based on Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga. This time the plot covers Luffy’s story from his start in Fuschia Village right up to his tussle with Doflamingo in Dressrosa, visiting iconic locales like Marineford, Fish-Man Island, and Punk Hazard on the way.

“That’s the biggest concern we had when we started working on the game, says Hisashi Koinuma, Executive Game Director from Koei Tecmo Games. “First of all, we need to consider those players who haven’t read that much of the One Piece manga or haven’t watched that much of the anime,” he says. “We have to make sure the storyline is understandable even to newcomers to the One Piece franchise.”

Ace and Sabo are both playable characters in Pirate Warriors 3 and the creative team was careful to balance all the characters’ power levels. “Basically, we reviewed in-game stats from the past two instalments,” says Koinuma-san. “The new characters coming into a manga or anime are often stronger than the existing characters, so we have to review all those in-game stats to make sure that Luffy can compete with the new characters.”

Pirate Warriors 3 introduces the Kizuna System that enables players to summon comrades to perform massive team-up combos. “Kizuna stands for the bond among friends, so in the case of One Piece it’s the bond between Luffy and his friends,” says Koinuma-san. “The Kizuna System is about special combos. We have the special attack called the Kizuna Attack. The player’s character can do some moves, and after that, the support character is summoned and does the follow-up attack. We also have the special feature called the Kizuna Rush. And we have another new feature called Kizuna Docking, which is the enhanced version of the Kizuna Rush. Basically five characters, including the playable character, join to deliver combos and by utilising these attacks, it is easy for even a beginner to beat the final boss of each stage.”

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 is out now for the PS3, PS4, PS Vita and PC from Bandai Namco Entertainment.
