Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3

Matthew Edwards speaks to CyberConnect2 about the shifting story of Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 and the difficulties of cramming 80 playable characters into one fighting game.

Although the first Ultimate Ninja game didn't surface in Europe until 2006, this year marks the 10th anniversary of the world's most numerous and popular Naruto fighting series. That's a whole decade of trading throwing stars with Sasuke in curse-seal mode, building flashy combos with the taijutsu skills of Rock Lee, pulling away Kakashi's eye-patch to activate his hidden Sharingan, and watching as Naruto ups the ante with everything from his Shadow Clone technique to the Rasenshuriken and beyond. But now that the ninth main game is upon us, what have CyberConnect2 done to make sure that the ninja battles remain fighting fresh?
Speaking to CyberConnect 2 President, Hiroshi Matsuyama, it's clear that the ongoing story remains one of the key focal points. "The main difference between Ninja Storm Generations and Ninja Storm 3 lies in the Ultimate Adventure," Matsuyama explains. "This is a mode in which players can enjoy the latest stories of the anime series. Players can fully immerse themselves in the universe of Naruto Shippuden with thrilling boss battles and dramatic cinematic visuals." But while the last game focused on the generation divide between the original series and the Shippuden follow-on, Ninja Storm 3 is predominately set in the present.

That said, CyberConnect2 haven't left out the young bloods entirely. "There are a handful of younger characters appearing in this title as well", Matsuyama assures us. "There is a system called the Ninja World Timeline that compiles the famous battles of the Naruto and Shippuden eras." Hopefully this means we'll get to relive classic conflicts like Gaara and Rock Lee's brawl at the Chunin Exams; Sakura's epic showdown with the puppet master Sasori; Sasuke and Itachi's fateful fight to the death; and Naruto's bombastic battle against the seemingly unstoppable Nagato. And with over 80 characters in the largest Ultimate Ninja roster to date, players can live out more dream matches than ever before.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 is out now for the PS3 and Xbox 360 from Namco Bandai. Believe it!
