ZombiU

One of the most highly anticipated titles on the new Wii U console is ZombiU, Ubisoft's answer to survival horror franchises like Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Unlike the latter, ZombiU takes the 'survival' part of the genre very seriously, and old school players will feel a hint of nostalgia in the claustrophobic gameplay, which sees you running from zombies, conserving ammo, and turning every corner with your heart in your mouth.

Adding further to the fear factor is the fact that when your character dies, it's literally game over for them - you begin anew in the safe house as a totally new person. Luckily, you don't have to start the game all over again, but if you want any of the special items that you've gathered, you'll have to track down your former avatar and loot the corpse for the goods.

Further unique gameplay elements come from the use of the GamePad, which displays a map and inventory screens, and can be used to interact with the game environment - for example, allowing you to break barriers by tapping, or scan the in-game area by moving the pad around your room. You can even make great use of it during a brilliantly devised two player mode, which sees one player acting as the survivor, whilst the other deploys zombies to bring them down.

Not without its flaws, ZombiU nevertheless provides an excellent starting point for demonstrating the power of Nintendo's new system.

A true survival horror game, which harkens back to the good old days of the genre whilst embracing brand new levels of interactivity.
