Resident Evil: Revelations

Returning to the series' survival horror roots, Revelations does more to re-energise Resident Evil than either the fifth or sixth 'main' entry - not bad for a game that premiered as a 3DS side-story.

This high-def console upgrade brings back classic leads Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield, sending them on a two-pronged investigation into the new evil organisation du jour, Il Veltro. The main location, an abandoned cruise ship, beautifully channels the claustrophobic locales of early Resi games. A renewed emphasis on puzzles and exploration tempts you to venture into the shadowy depths, while the limited ammo and creeping uncertainty of what lurks in each new room or corridor restores a much-needed sense of tension - fear, even - that the series has been lacking in recent years.

Despite jumping to the 'grown up' consoles, Revelations remains clearly a 3DS game by origin. Visuals aren't as impressive as titles designed for 360 or PS3 from the ground up - though still leagues ahead of what the handheld can offer - and the variety of enemies remains lacking. However, new characters, fresh weapons, an expanded story and an enhanced Raid Mode (challenging players to clear areas of monsters, earning weapon upgrades and more) more than make up for it.

Easily the best Resident Evil outing in years, with enough new ideas to move the series forward without becoming a generic shooter. Revelations feels like a 'best of' assemblage of the series best ideas, let down only by its slightly sub-par visuals.
