Hakuoki

Hakuoki has already been featured in the pages of NEO magazine in both its anime incarnation (Hakuoki: Demon Of The Fleeting Blossom from MVM Entertainment) and in game form (Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi from Rising Star Games for the 3DS). Now, All The Anime take a break from anime distribution to bring us a smartphone version of the otome game Hakuoki, which is available in both a standard and premium edition.

For the standard edition, gamers can play the prologue chapter for free when downloading the app, and purchase additional stories one by one for £2.99 (with a total of 14 chapters to play) as they progress, eventually unlocking a bonus story which is exclusive for the European version. The premium edition features all of the content for one, reduced price (compared to the standard edition), but this price varies depending on the platform you’re using.

This visual novel takes you back to 1863, and the time of the Shinsengumi, the ronin who were military peacekeepers in Kyoto. You play as Chizuru (or whatever you want to call yourself), a young woman searching for her missing father, who finds herself embroiled in the dealings of the Shinsengumi when she witnesses them bringing death to a peculiar group of villains. As the player, it’s your job to make decisions that will affect the outcome of the plot, and the course of true love!

Romance comes to your mobile phone – makes a change from all that porn.
SCORE: 4/5
