Top 5 Superhero Team-Ups That You Wouldn't Believe Happened: #4

DR JEKYLL/MR HYDE, THE INVISIBLE MAN, ALLAN QUATERMAIN, MINA MURRAY, CAPTAIN NEMO
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

For someone so outspoken about how Hollywood mistreats “his” work, Alan Moore has certainly made a career out of bastardising existing characters and creations (Watchmen being a pastiche of repurposed Charlton Comics characters, From Hell being a reimagining of the Ripper murders, Lost Girls depicting pornographic versions of Alice (from Wonderland), Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) and Wendy (Peter Pan)).

The League of Extraordinary Gentleman is no different in that regard – though nor is it any different in the manner that Moore so expertly crafts and retcons a wondrous new universe around his appropriated cast. While later series descended (perhaps appropriately, given the author) into hallucinogenic anarchy, the first two volumes were nothing short of sensational.

Featuring characters plucked from the pages of 19th Century literature, Moore assembles a Victorian-era superteam consisting of Wilhelmina Murray (Dracula), Allan Quatermain (King Solomon’s Mines), Dr Henry Jekyll/Mr Edward Hyde (Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde), Hawley Griffin (The Invisible Man) and Captain Nemo (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea).

With their exploits seeing them encounter everyone from James Bond and Mary Poppins to Prospero and Harry Potter, if you’ve ever read a famous work of fiction then the chances are that you’ll bump into some familiar faces in this epic series. Just don’t watch the film or you’ll be horribly, horribly disappointed.
