NEO Awards 2016 Best Franchise POKEMON

More than any other Japanese IP this year, Pokémon has captured the hearts of the mainstream public to become a global phenomenon – the same year it celebrated its 20th anniversary. Thanks to the runaway success of Pokémon Go, the franchise has been catapulted into the public’s hearts once again in a way that it hasn’t since perhaps those very early days in the late ‘90s, when the movies were hitting the cinema, and every kid had a favourite Pokémon near to their heart.

Since then, the games, movies and shows have kept coming, but interest had waned, until the summer, when Niantic adapted their existing location-based game, Ingress, to create a brand new Pokémon game, leading to worldwide headlines that ranged from the heartwarming to the absolutely insane. The app has been downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide, so if we were discussing simply this game alone, the franchise would have been sure to win the category.

However, we’ve also been treated to a range of other fantastic releases this year, including Manga’s Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages on DVD and Blu-ray, and the DVD and limited edition steelbook release of the Pokémon Movies one to three collection. And let’s not forget Nintendo’s launch of Pokémon Sun and Moon!

“This has been the year of Pokémon – from games to movies, the franchise has had a massive resurgence,” said Andrew Hewson, Marketing Manager, Manga Animatsu. “We are very proud to have been a part of it by bringing the fans these wonderful movies on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.”
