NEO Awards 2016 Best Manga Distributor Viz Media
Another year, and another win for VIZ Media, who yet again scooped the prize for the best manga distributor for their hard work in bringing over some exceptional titles to the UK market. “2016 has been a record year for manga sales, and so much of that is down to the readers of NEO magazine,” said Sarah Anderson. “So a big thank you from everyone at VIZ Media for your support, and here’s to even more brilliant titles in 2017.”
Unsurprisingly, Tokyo Ghoul was one of the best sellers for the company over the last 12 months. “Sales across the whole series are over 200,000 copies, and Tokyo Ghoul 1 has been the bestselling manga title of the year – over 30,000 copies,” Anderson told us. “It’s just a phenomenon – we’ve never had anything that has been such an immediate success, and the best thing is that it’s continued throughout all the volumes.
“And after saying that Tokyo Ghoul was a phenomenon, it looks like One-Punch Man is one too! It was a little slower to start than Tokyo Ghoul, but the momentum soon built, to the point that volume one is the second bestselling manga title this year, with sales of 25,000 copies. Both Tokyo Ghoul and One-Punch Man as series are similar in the respect that the enthusiasm of the fans has remained strong throughout ten volumes of each series, there’s a lot of creative cosplay, and there’s a new volume out every other month.
“And then we come to Haikyu!! To be honest, we’ve never had much success with sports manga, so I wasn’t expecting a lot from this series, but it definitely proved me wrong! Before we’d officially released volume one at the end of July, we’d had to re-order three times – that’s never happened before! Like Tokyo Ghoul and One-Punch Man, the sales are really steady across all new volumes – there’s not the usual decline that you see after volume one, and then to cap it all off, Haikyu!! wins Best Manga at the NEO Awards? It can’t get better than that!
