Had a bit of a film-fest after work today (usually the last thing I want to watch after work is a film. I work in a cinema). It is an anime film.

Vexhile 7/10- a very good sci fi film involving the usual action and espionage that you would expect from the creators of the legendary APPLESEED. It is set in the 21st century. The United Nations constrains modern bio technology which has improved the lives of humans so that it's use is limited and made safe. Japan who object to the proposals put forward by the UN and is forced to resign from the UN and japans door to the west is closed. Just to get you intrigued I will not give away to much off the plot so watch it and see. I found the plot to be quite confusing. Giving 1 or 2 more watches that rating would have gone up but on the one viewing 7/10.

Long Dream/Nagai Yume - An adaptation of Ito's manga of the same name. Now this is only around an hour, but it is brilliant. You can tell not a lot of money went into this (especially when you see some of the effects) but I almost found that more enjoyable and realistic, it had a genuinely eerie feeling throughout. Unfortunately I haven't read the manga of the same name, so I can't actually compare it to that.
Enjoyable nonetheless.
8/10

Kaiji - I wasn’t expecting to be blown away by this but it ended up to being quite an entertaining watch. Acting wise Tatsuya Fujiwara (that guy from Battle Royale and Death Note) does his usual overacting, as do the rest of the cast but it goes well the whole feel of the movie so doesn’t spoil much. The twists and turns in the story aren’t that complex but do the job of keeping you glued to the screen. This probably won’t stand up to repeated viewings but who cares, I enjoyed it while it lasted and was never once bored in the whole 2+ hours runtime.

Little Big Soldier - Thought this was great fun and definitely one of Jackie's best films released in the last few years. Here's hoping he makes more like this.
4/5

The Equation of Love and Death - A nice little noir-style mystery that's held together by Xun Zhou's performance. I really enjoyed it but some may find the plot twist a bit too coincidental.

Oh jeez, where do I begin?

I got fed up of waiting for official R2 releases of the Dragon Dynasty Shaw Brothers films so I went and imported a bunch of the R1s, including...

The One Armed Swordsman - Cheng Cheh's classic from 1967, starring Jimmy Yang Wu. To put it simply, bloody brilliant. 5/5

Five Deadly Venoms - Another Cheng Cheh film, not as brilliant, but not far off. 4.5/5

Come Drink With Me - King Hu directed, Chang Pei-Pei starred, for as influential as this film is both have done better work. 3/5

I also picked up a few Lau Kar Leung films, My Young Auntie and Heroes Of The East, I just haven't got around to watching them yet.

Also...

Fish Story - A really clever and well made piece of non linear story telling. Chaos theory in motion, spread over numerous years and characters, it is far too complex to give a brief synopsis but so easy to follow as a film. Third Window have done themselves proud with this one. 4.75/5

Secret Reunion - Song Kang-ho stars in this tale of a former police man and a former North Korean spy meeting up years after one was chasing the other. A solid film and it is easy to see why it was really popular in its native Korea, but there could have been a lot more done with this "odd-couple" type of idea. 3.5/5

So many others, but that's it for now.

Goemon: another visual treat from the guy who made Casshern a few years ago, story was ok aswell 8/10

Big Man Japan: not as funny as it thinks it is but a pretty fun movie none the less, the end battle is a pretty funny dig at the cheapness and lunacy of stuff like power rangers and ultraman though so is well worth watching 7/10

will add my short reviews of 14 blades and other films as i get through them over the weekend.
