Last two films;
The Expendables and
Scott Pilgrim VS The World.
Nope, I didn't travel. My local cinema just seems to be a week behind the rest of the country!
The Expendables
This was the best audience I ever had. SO respectful, so quiet, so polite.
I was the only b**ger there!!!
Sat right up front, had my legs on the stage, a firestick pepperami up there when I wanted it. Had an Asahi on the stage to sip from....and I had need of it. The Expendables is not a bad film; but it is not the brilliant action flicker that it's fans claim it to be. Stallone has made an amatuerish pic that screams direct to DVD at times. What's good? Well, Sly, Li and Statham...Terry Crews is great for such a small role. It's nice to see Willis Sly and Arnie onscreen even if it ain't too long a scene. And SOME of the action is very nice. The pirate scene is great, but it's right at the start and over real quick. The ending has some very neat shootouts.....but in the middle of the film, it just kind of slouches, unmemorably, and aimlessly. Story and screenplay are alass not Slys strongpoints! I'm thinking of that cringeworthy scene where Mickey Rourke 'emotes'!
There is CGI blood aplenty, a bug-bear for many. And the fights...........ugh. Those of you watching for Jet-Li (I hear the opening box office for China was huge - I anticipate drop-offs) will be
very disapointed! You cannot tell it's him fighting Dolph Lundgren. It could be anyone. The fist fights are
all filmed too close, so all we see from shaky cam are flailing limbs and a faceless blur.
This gets a charitable 3/5. Fun but forgettable, deeply flawed. Have a beer, cheer, and shed a tear, cause old Sly is done!
Scott Pilgrim VS The World
I too haven't read the books.....well, I read the first one and couldn't see what all the fuss was about,
at all. I still don't think it's
quite as 'amazing' as everyone else. But I did have fun. There was a crowd at the back who not only laughed
explosively at everything, but they seemed to laugh on cue; like they knew what was coming. Fans of the books. Me, I found I smiled but it wasn't laugh out loud funny except for the vegan scene. Brandon Routh was suprisingly good at laughs and there was a nice cameo there from Tom Jane.
Maybe one thing that meant it took me a few minutes to get into the film is that despite having a good script, direction, and visuals....I didn't care for the protagonist. Is he meant to be an 'ass' (as he would say)? I mean, it's not impossible to like (so to speak) self centred characters. Exhibit a) Don Draper;
But Don is charismatic, he makes you like him, even though his actions are not admirable. Scott fails to do that. Michael Cera eventually managed to make him....I don't know, tolerable. The evil exes overshadowed him though, especially Routh and Jason Schwartzman.
Visually brilliant, and I'll have to watch it on a big tv to replicate the cinematic experience!
Oh! One more thing. The fight scenes were very good. Are you getting this Mr.Stallone? YOU COULD SEE WHAT WAS HAPPENING! And you could see their frakking faces!!!!!!
