Borders was an independant shop while Waterstones is a part of a group.
Borders was still a chain store, it's the same as Waterstones, apart from Borders was owned by Valco Capital Partners where Waterstones is owned by HMV Group.

This is an independent shop:

Waterstones in Basingstoke has a coffee-shop upstairs in which you can read a book when having some coffee

The key difference is the lack of drunken and unfriendly staff.

All that is left now is Waterstones (not as good) and WHSmith (not even in the same league) or the online stores.

I suppose Blackwells is around, but that is more for Academic books.
